5 Rugged Floor Protectors for Any Garage Workshop

Floor protector

Are you in search of a rugged floor protector for your garage workshop area? If so, there are several great garage floor‑covering options available. So many in fact, it's relatively easy to pick out the mats you like and stay within your price range.

Here is a brief overview of five different types of floor coverings. Not all mats are appropriate for all situations. Please keep that in mind.

Roll‑out Floor Mats

Roll‑out floor mats are resistant to chemicals, engine oil and any additional staining that might occur. These mats provide excellent insulation in the winter months. Roll‑out floor mats also provide anti‑slip protection and are easily the most affordable garage floor mat. They come in a variety of colors, which makes it easy to transform an old garage into an attractive and functional workspace.

Flexible Floor Tiles

Interlocking flexible floor tiles create a softer, slip‑resistant floor surface. These plastic tiles come in a variety of colors and patterns, allowing you to customize your garage to your tastes. Installation is as easy as cutting each tile to the desired shape with a utility knife and pressing the interlocking edges together.

A rubber mallet or wallpaper roller can be used to help lock each one into place. Any damage or staining to the tiles can be fixed by simply replacing the damaged tile or tiles. The interlocking tiles are very resistant to liquid seepage through the seams and offer a comfortable alternative to your concrete garage floor.

Rigid Floor Tiles

Rigid floor tiles are made of tougher material than flexible tiles. This allows them to stand up to heavier loads and potential damage much more effectively. Many different colors and styles are available, including tiles, which are perforated to drain away spills and liquids. They are much easier to clean than mats or softer tiles and are also more chemically resistant. These tiles are also easy to install; simply line up the tiles and step on them to connect the male and female loops.

Outdoor/Industrial Carpet

While outdoor or industrial carpet can be a bit more difficult to clean in a garage workshop, it provides a comfortable and insulated floor. Outdoor carpet must be glued to the floor, but installation is not too difficult. Outdoor carpet can be found in many different colors and textures.

Be sure to choose one with a rubber marine backing, which will be more resistant to moisture. Tough stains can be cleaned with household dish soap and a soft brush. Avoid using harsh chemicals, which could cause damage to the carpet’s backing. Oils will generally not stain this type of carpet because it is made up of synthetic materials.

Parking Mats - Garage Floor Protector

Parking mats are ideal for people that use their garage for parking. Parking mats are sturdy and easy to remove for cleaning. However, protecting the garage floor from any chemicals from vehicle repairs is not the intended use. Parking mats don't provide the coverage to protect the garage floor from staining, but parking mats provide protection against tire marks and general wear and tear from vehicles. Prices for parking mats range from $30 to $300. The mats require no installation.

Now that you know more about different kinds of garage floor mats, it should be easier to make a decision in regard to what's best for you. Whether it's garage floor tiles, carpet or garage floor mats, you'll appreciate how much protection these coverings provide.

After installation is complete, chances are you'll wonder how you ever got along with just a plain concrete floor. While looking at the floor, you may decide it’s time for a new garage door. Click here to fill out our form for a free quote.
