Make A DIY Garage Gym With Household Items

DIY Garage Gym

The stats don’t lie: according to research, around 67% of all people who purchase a gym membership never actually go to the gym.

This results in an average of $39 wasted per $58 of gym dues paid - a significant chunk of the industry’s revenue. You don’t have to become just another workout statistic. Using items that you might simply have lying around the garage, you can turn your carport into a versatile workout space that you’re much more likely to use.

An Old Basketball

That’s right, if you happen to have an old basketball hanging around the garage, you already have one item that you can use to work out in your garage. Most basketballs are made of either leather, vinyl posing as leather or rubber. Typically speaking, rubber basketballs have the best grip to act as a medicine ball while leather basketballs are more expensive while feeling more like a traditional medicine ball. Vinyl basketballs vary, but are likely to be a bit less comfortable than leather and less grippy than rubber.

After you’ve chosen the basketball you want to transform into a medicine ball, the next step is acquiring the filler and the patching material. Pellets of salt are typically recommended, as is a tire patch kit, which bonds well to rubber, leather and vinyl. The amount of salt pellets you should purchase depends on the weight of the medicine ball you want to create. A decent size to try out is forty pounds to start. If it’s too light or heavy, you can add weight or drain the ball to adjust.

The first step to creating the medicine ball is slicing a hole in the basketball, just large enough to fill the innards but not so large to make it difficult to patch up with the tire kit. Try to make the hole match the size of the salt pellet container to make it easier to fill. After you fill the ball to the desired weight, seal up the opening with the tire kit.

Plywood Plyometric Box

Another incredibly easy and inexpensive DIY gym project that you can pull off in your garage is the creation of a plyometric box, useful for a variety of core and leg exercises. To start, you can purchase a large sheet of plywood or simply dig one up that might be lying around from other home DIY projects.

Cut the plywood neatly into six equal squares. The box should be tall enough to require effort to leap upon and present a large enough landing surface for you to land upon. You’ll need to attach the squares of wood at a right angle using a combination of screws and strong wood glue to ensure sturdiness.

The glue should be spread across the surface of where the squares of wood will touch. Affixing screws every few inches along the perimeter is the best way to ensure that the box will survive the weight of repeated landings with ease.

A Giant Tire

Yup - if you have a giant, heavy tire lying around, you can also use that as part of your workout routine. For this piece of equipment, you’ll want to make sure that you have enough space to work with and nothing close‑by that the tire will accidentally roll into and destroy.

One great exercise that works many muscles at once is simply lifting and turning over the tire, challenging your legs, arms, core, back and shoulders. If you’re looking for a tough workout that focuses on your legs, tie a thick rope around your waist and attach it to the tire, dragging it along the ground as you accelerate.

If you have a sledgehammer, another fantastic workout involves striking the tire with the hammer repeatedly. Controlling the swing and bounce of the sledgehammer requires power from many different muscle groups around your body.

Build A Power Rack With Wood

Another DIY garage workout solution that you can implement with items lying around is a power rack that holds the one must‑have item that you should buy for your gym - an Olympic bar with an assortment of bumper plates.

Considering that this item will need to hold significant amounts of weight, it’s best to attempt this only if you have a bit of previous experience with DIY projects.

A power rack gives you the chance to add as many features as can safely fit, such as a pull‑up bar, a power squat nook and elastic resistance equipment for your pecs and triceps.
