5 Ways to Reclaim Your Garage

5 ways to reclaim your garage

If your garage is cluttered and you’re finding it difficult to close the garage door due to overcrowding, it may be time to give the garage a makeover. There comes a time when even after multiple yard sales, the garage is crowded and it becomes overwhelming.

The good news is you can reclaim your garage and turn it back into a livable and usable space.

Separating Areas Into Livable Zones

According to Bob Vila, “The first step toward creating a more livable garage is to establish zones: one for your car, one for your workshop, and one for your personal enjoyment.”

Decide which sections of the garage you will use for different tasks and stick to it. Once the general areas are established, it’s time to explore organization and storage methods.

Stacking with Shelves and Cabinets

Add shelves along unused walls to stack and store boxes, canisters and other storage containers. Build high shelves and cabinets near the ceiling for making the most out of the unused space. This is the perfect area for storing winter decorations and other items that only get used once or twice a year.

You can build shelving directly into the garage walls or use free‑standing shelving units. Once you decide on the perfect layout, secure the shelving units and cabinets to prevent injuries and accidents.

Hanging From The Rafters

The Family Handyman suggests making the most out of wall and ceiling space. “Don't waste floor space on your wheelbarrow — hang it on the wall.” By hanging the wheelbarrow on the wall, you save valuable floor space for shelving units and other heavy items. You can fill the wall space above shelves or other items with garden tools, extension cords, hoses and other items.

Hanging items from the ceiling also frees up floor space. Make use of this unused space by hanging bicycles and ladders with specialty hooks and hangers.

Moving It Outdoors

Build a small outdoor cabinet or attractive shelving unit near the patio, garden or along the side of the house. This is a great option for garden tools, barbecue and grilling items or other supplies. This gets the items out of the garage and in a more convenient location where they are easy to access.

If more space is needed, you can build several of these outdoor lockers to each store similar items. This is a nice option when indoor space is limited.

Enlarging and Expanding

Expanding the garage and adding a ‘bump out’ or addition is also an option to consider when reorganizing just isn’t enough. Expansions often include removing a wall, or a portion of the wall, where the expansion will connect. The expanded area will give additional room for storage, workspace or can even be turned into a personal get‑away.
